# Authorize ClickUp

Connect ClickUp to Whalesync by signing in or with a personal API token, and what to do about each ClickUp connection error.

Whalesync connects to ClickUp in one of two ways. Signing in is the default; a personal API token is an alternative if you prefer not to sign in, or are setting up a sync through the [API](https://docs.whalesync.com/api/reference.md) or [MCP server](https://docs.whalesync.com/api/mcp.md) and need a credential to hand over.

Either way, Whalesync acts as the ClickUp user who connected: it sees that user's spaces and lists, and tasks it creates or edits show that user as the actor in ClickUp. Dates without a time are read and written in that user's timezone (see [Dates](https://docs.whalesync.com/connectors/clickup.md#dates)). Many teams create a dedicated ClickUp user for this.

1. In Whalesync, choose ClickUp and click **Authorize**.
2. Sign in to ClickUp if it asks, select the workspaces Whalesync can use, and confirm.
3. Pick the workspace to sync.

Whalesync sees only the workspaces you selected. To add one later, reconnect ClickUp and select it too. The sign-in doesn't expire.

## Use a personal API token

1. In ClickUp, click your avatar in the upper-right corner and choose **Settings**.
2. In the sidebar, click **Apps**.
3. Under **API Token**, click **Generate** or **Regenerate**, then click **Copy**.
4. In the connect step in Whalesync, choose **Use a personal API token instead**, paste the token, and click **Authorize**.
5. Pick the workspace to sync.

A personal token doesn't expire. It reaches every workspace the user belongs to. Reauthorizing with a token for a different user, one that can't see a workspace the connection already syncs, is refused.

A connection keeps its method. To switch between token and sign-in, create a new connection.

## Errors

| Message | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| ClickUp did not accept this personal token | The token was copied wrong or regenerated. Copy it again from ClickUp. |
| This personal token cannot reach a ClickUp workspace this connection already syncs | The token belongs to a user who isn't in a workspace the connection syncs. Use a token for the same ClickUp account. |
| This ClickUp workspace is not authorized for Whalesync | The workspace was left unselected when someone signed in again, or the connected user left it. Reconnect ClickUp and select the workspace when ClickUp asks which ones to share. |
| ClickUp no longer accepts the credentials Whalesync is using | The token was regenerated, or the sign-in stopped working. Reconnect ClickUp. |
| ClickUp is rate limiting Whalesync | Nothing. Whalesync retries when ClickUp's limit resets. |
