Authorize Jira
Connect Jira Cloud to Whalesync by signing in with your Atlassian account, which Jira permissions it needs, and what to do about each Jira connection error.
Whalesync connects to Jira by signing in with an Atlassian account. There's no API token option.
Whalesync acts as the Jira user who signs in: it sees the sites and projects that user can browse, and Jira records the changes it makes as that user's. What it can do in each project follows that user's Jira permissions.
Section titled “Sign in”- In Whalesync, choose Jira and click Authorize.
- Sign in to Atlassian if it asks, and accept the access Whalesync asks for: reading and writing Jira issues, reading users, reading boards and sprints, and staying connected after you sign in.
- Pick the Jira Cloud site to sync. Every site the sign-in reaches is listed.
Permissions the user needs
Section titled “Permissions the user needs”| Jira permission | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Browse projects | Listing and reading a project. |
| Create issues | Creating issues, and reading the project's create screens, which decide its columns. Without it, the project's table has no custom fields. See Syncing Data. |
| Edit issues, Transition issues | Changing issues and their status. |
| Delete issues | Deleting issues. |
| Administer projects | Not required. Without it, synced edits email an issue's watchers. See Watcher emails. |
When Jira refuses a change for lack of permission, Whalesync reports it as a sync issue for that issue, with Jira's reason.
Errors
Section titled “Errors”| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Jira no longer accepts the sign-in Whalesync is using | Access was revoked, or the sign-in stopped working. Reconnect Jira. |
| Whalesync can no longer reach this Jira site | The connected account lost access to the site. Reconnect Jira with an account that can use it. |
| Whalesync needs more access to Jira for this | The sign-in is missing access Whalesync now asks for, such as reading sprints. Reconnect Jira and accept the access it asks for. |
| Whalesync doesn't have permission to access this in Jira | The connected user lacks a Jira permission for this project or issue. Jira's own message replaces this one when it gives one. Grant the permission in Jira, or reconnect as a user who has it. |
| You have exceeded the service API quota | Nothing. Whalesync has reached Jira's limit on requests, and starts again by itself within the hour. |
| Jira is rate limiting Whalesync | Nothing. Whalesync retries when Jira's limit resets. |
| Jira returned only part of the search results | Nothing. Whalesync reads the project again later, rather than treating the issues it didn't get as deleted. |
